Game of War: Fire Age – Troop Balance

Game of War: Fire Age – Troop BalanceIn Game of War: Fire Age, I’ve been getting a lot of questions on troop balance. Basically, other players are wondering if I focus on one type of troop (Infantry, Ranged, Cavalry and Siege), do I balance them all evenly, or do I have some sort of weird split. So I’m going to do a quick review of troop balance in the game.

Game of War: Fire Age has a modified Paper-Rock-Scissors setup for their troops. Infantry are good versus Cavalry, Ranged are good versus Infantry, Cavalry are good versus Ranged, and everything is good versus Siege, but Siege are good against Traps. Traps are good versus one type of unit (Infantry, Ranged or Cavalry) but are weak versus Siege. They also have additional attributes as well, besides just being good versus a specific type of enemy.

Infantry – Second slowest but second highest load capacity

Ranged – Second fastest but second lowest load capacity

Cavalry – Fastest but smallest load capacity

Siege – Slowest but biggest load capacity

On top of that, the higher tier a troop is the slower it is. Also, the higher tier the troop is the bigger the load capacity. So the Tier 4 Siege (Onager) is the slowest troop in the game but has the highest load capacity. These are just good things to know so you can pick your own strategy for troop balance.

For most of my time in this game, I’ve tried to balance out my troops evenly. I try to have an even number of the highest tier of troops I can make. So I’ll have the same amount of Infantry, Ranged, Cavalry, and Siege troops. I think that if you don’t really have a specific strategy, you can’t go wrong with this one.

I’ve heard people say that Infantry troops are the most common, so you should run heavy on Ranged. I’ve also heard people say they run all Cavalry because they are the fastest troops and march speed is really important to them. I’ve also heard people say they build what they have the most bonuses in. For example, if their Cavalry bonus was extremely high, they started focusing on Cavalry troops.

Although I use a balanced approach for the most part, I can definitely see the appeal of picking one type, lets say Ranged, and completely focusing all of your bonuses on that type. You socket gems that give bonuses to Ranged in all of your hero’s gear. You focus hard on researching Ranged bonuses in your Academy. And you focus on skills for your hero that improve your Ranged bonuses. This would all add up to some incredibly bad-ass Ranged troops for you, right?

Well, I haven’t gone to that extreme so I am still running a balanced setup. I recently acquired a Level 6 Cavalry gem that gives +25% to Cavalry Attack. I’m also crafting a Level 5 (Purple) piece of equipment with a large bonus to Cavalry Attack. I will be doing some testing with Cavalry-only marches to see if that type of troop balance can be effective in attacking people.

In the end there are pros and cons to both approaches: the balanced approach versus the focused approach. I say do what works for you. You can’t go wrong with a balanced approach, but if you suddenly find yourself with a bunch of high level gems for one type of troop, maybe you could give the focused approach a try. I’d like to hear about your experiences using, and fighting, balanced armies and focused armies!
